Andrew Alexander Blair papers relating to the U.S.S. Resaca expedition to Alaska, 1867-1868.

The papers consist of two diaries kept by midshipman Andrew A. Blair during his service aboard the U.S.S. Resaca during the Resaca's 1867 expedition to Sitka, Alaska from Valparaiso, Chile, and from Sitka, Alaska, to San Francisco, California, in 1868. The first diary (168 p.) covers the the Chile-Alaska leg, 1867 Mar 31-Oct 18, and includes expense accounts. Blair provides descriptions of visited locations including Valparaiso, Panama, San Francisco, Vancouver Island, the Georgia Strait region, various points along British Columbia's coast, and Sitka; conditions and events aboard the Resaca during the yellow fever outbreak and subsequent journey north; and details about his own health and observations. The final entry in the first volume is Blair's personal account of the transfer of Alaska from the Russians to the Americans in Sitka. Newspaper clippings related to diary entries are pasted in the volume and a black and white photograph of Blair in uniform is laid inside the cover. The second volume (38 p.), with entries between Jan 1 and Jan 27, 1868, documents the voyage from Sitka to San Francisco, noting events aboard the Resaca, including Princess Maksutov's presence. Blair's last entry is from Camp McDowell in Arizona. Blair's commission as ensign in the Navy, dated March 24, 1868, is also present.
